New Waste to Energy Facility

The scheme was to provide a Biomass combustion system which would be able to create power through the use of steam expanders. We were commissioned to complete a scheme which had already commenced. The scheme was in need of a full review of the programme and financial model. The work we undertook established the required capital and time required to complete the scheme and we advised the board of the operating company. It was agreed that the scheme would progress, and we were commissioned as Project and Commercial Managers to proceed with the project.

The scheme was to process 25,000 tonnes of waste wood, operating at a rate of less than 3 tonnes per hour. The permit obtained was to process waste wood (grade b/c). The incineration of the wood waste is by using a fluidised bed creating heat and steam which passes through a creates electrical energy by passing through a steam screw expander generator. On this scheme there are 2 no steam screw expander generators producing 1.5 MW of electrical energy.

The scheme relied on the export of power to the grid whilst supplemented with a PPA Agreement with adjoining site tenants. There were 2 no diesel generators within the scheme to provide power back up for the power generation should the combustor and generators be off line for annual maintenance or repair.
