Edinburgh Tram Network

Edinburgh Tram Network is a 13 km line connecting Edinburgh Airport with the city centre. This is the first phase of lines which will be developed into a full tram network connecting the whole of Edinburgh. The first phase of the tram network required the building of the new depot and stabling yard. The depot was constructed within an 8 m deep basin at the end of Edinburgh airport emergency runway. The structure housed the main control room for the tram network, with fibre cables laid from the depot along the whole of the network. Within the depot was a maintenance area for service and repair work to the trams.

We lead the commercial management on the depot and the line from the airport through to Murrayfield Stadium. These sections of the tram network included the construction of numerous structures, including bridges, secant piled walls, under passes, track form, overhead line piling and foundations. The works were undertaken along and over existing Network Rail live tracks, conducted with track possessions. We lead the commercial management on the new depot and stabling yard, ensuring the depot was completed on time and to budget. The high quality and complexity of the design was challenging. The proximity of the emergency runway added further complexity during the erection of the structural steel frame, as the crane jib was on a 20 minute warning to be lowered in case of emergency use of the runway.
