New Aquarium Development for the Millennium Commission

Situated at the confluence of two rivers, Sammy’s Point was the chosen location to locate this millennium project. The project commenced in 2000 and was opened to the public in 2002. The building was designed by Terry Farrell and constructed by Lend Lease. The building has a 10 metre deep aquarium, a 9 metre deep viewing tunnel (Europe’s largest), and a glass viewing lift which travels through the tank. The tank contains 2,500,000 litres of water and is home to sharks, rays, and various other species of fish.

We assisted with the Commercial Management on the project, providing commercial assistance with the groundworks, structural steel, cladding, roofing, and tank glazing packages. The project was delivered through a standard Management form of Contract. Given the proximity to the rivers, the build was challenging and required additional safety considerations, e.g. harnesses and clipping on whilst on the external scaffolding, provision of life jackets/rings and rescue boat.

In addition to “The Deep” main attraction, we provided support with the commercial management of the new pedestrian swing bridge and associated fendering. Also on the site is a business centre providing offices to local businesses.
